Health Camp in Waco, TX
By Elizabeth Stice
What is more American than a burger and a milkshake? You might think places like this are only left in movies, but you’d be wrong.
Scattered across the country, you can still find burger joints where the grease hangs in the air and the fries are in a basket. At Health Camp, you can also get tater tots and there are over twenty options for milkshakes. The place is small enough to fill up, but big enough to bring your friends.
These were classic burgers crispy around the edges long before "smash burgers" became a trend.
The interior takes you back to ancestral memories. The napkins are in metal Coca-Cola dispensers.
Teenagers work behind the counter. You can pay with cash if you want to do that. From the window you can watch one of the most challenging intersections in Waco.
You know it's good when they know the difference between a malt and a shake.
If you haven't had a Big Red before, what are you doing with your life?
